John's core training is with Relate Relate and he still works with them as a counsellor, trainer and psychosexual therapist. He has been in private practice for some 15 years, and is accredited with the British Association for Sexual and Relationship Therapy BASRT, and registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy UKCP

He works with couples and individuals on a variety of problems such as relationship problems and divorce/separation; stress management, at home and work; traumatic effects of illness and injury; anger management; personal development and general counselling.

Psychosexual therapy can help with many of the sexual problems that couples and individuals encounter. Among these are erectile problems, loss of desire, premature ejaculation, inability to climax (for both men and women), vaginismus (Painful contraction of the vaginal muscles which can make intercourse painful or indeed impossible) and non- specific pain on intercourse (dyspareunia).

Increasingly, problems which may be described as sexually compulsive behaviour or sexual addiction are becoming more apparent. These may be over-use of internet pornography, use of sex workers and escort services and demands on partners. This type of behaviour can be very distressing to both the subject and the partner. Psychosexual counselling can help as well as group therapy. Both are available from this practitioner.

Some people, especially in the sexual areas, may prefer not to work face-to-face. John works by e-mail and by telephone and this method may be preferred by some clients.

John appeared on the Channel 4 TV programme "Better Sex". He is the past Chair of the Bedford Area Counselling and Psychotherapy Association BACPA. He works in accordance with the codes of ethics and practise of the British Association of Sexual and Relationship Therapists BASRT and works with people of all sexual orientations and ethnicities.
